An
Interview with Rachael Warwick
By CSO French Contributing Journalist, Hélène Dagorn.
HD
:
Could you introduce yourself in a few words ?
RW
:
My name is Rachael Warwick. I’m a singer/songwriter and
I was born in 1970-something in the UK.
HD
:
How would you define the style of music you play ?
RW
:
This is quite a difficult question because everybody has a different
perspective on the style, but I would define it as alt-country/Americana
HD
:
Could you talk about your six track E.P "Maverick" ?
RW
:
"Maverick" was recorded at Emerald A studios in Nashville
and the musicians on the E.P are Reba McIntire’s band. It
was produced by Mark Moffatt (5 times Australia Producer of the
year). The songs are self-penned and I kind of think it’s
the next step in the evolution of Alt-Country/Americana and we’ve
called it Anglo-Americana, because it’s what happened when
an Anglo girl met an American band and an Australian producer.
HD
:
What was the inspiration behind it ?
RW
:
To try to take a more pop / mainstream approach to country music,
but still keep the essence of this genre of music and I think
we created an eclectic E.P of songs with some of Nashville’s
top musicians and it certainly seems to be getting a warm welcome
from new and old country fans alike.
HD
:
Did you plan to make a tour, in the US or in Europe ?
RW
:
Plans are being made now for a USA tour and the European tour
dates are well underway. My first date is the 1st - 3rd July at
the Interlaken Trucker and Country festival in Switzerland where
I will be supporting the Bellamy Brothers, more dates TBA soon.
HD
:
Does the success change your everyday life ?
RW
:
I am so busy at the moment, so that’s the only thing that’s
really changed, I appreciate any spare time I do get, which I
didn’t before. I feel quite humbled to think that people
are playing my song and especially when I get lovely emails from
people who appreciate my music.
HD
:
What are your musical influences ?
RW
:
You know, so many artists and bands influence me from Elvis Presley
(His stage presence and voice was amazing) to Sheryl Crow, the
Dixie Chicks (I love their harmonizing) Rod Stewart, there’s
just too many to mention, I have a plethora of artists that I
really admire. When I write though, my influences come from personal
experiences or experiences of people around me.
HD
:
What song do you wish you had written ?
RW
:
"In the ghetto". The words move me every time I hear
them and it makes me stop and wonder why in the 21st Century there
is still so much poverty.
HD
:
Do you play an instrument ?
RW
:
I’m learning guitar, but my voice is my instrument.
HD
:
What do you think about the development of country music ?
RW
:
I think the UK and Europe needs to embrace more of the NEW Country
artists and the sounds that are happening now. It’s a lot
edgier than traditional country. I think that traditional country
music is great but there is also room for the evolvement of today’s
new country.
HD
:
Do you think there is a difference between American and European
audiences ?
RW
:
Absolutely, the UK audience in particular is more of the older
generation that sometimes struggle to accept new country and I
think this is where the UK’s downfall will be as far as
country music is concerned as the younger generation in the main
aren’t interested in traditional country, but if they were
introduced to the likes of Keith Urban, Chris Cagle, Rascal Flatts,
Gretchen Wilson, Kasey Chambers etc….. it would bring the
UK Country music scene back to life.
HD
:
What does the word "Country" mean to you ?
RW
:
Traditional country music to me is a simple style of roots folk
music and blues with a great story that most people can relate
to with the main instruments being steel, dobro, guitar, bass,
fiddle, mandolin, banjo and drums. However today I feel that Country
music has a great stylistic diversity, take Big n Rich for example
with their new Music Mafia sound they have combined, rock, pop
and even rapping creating an infusion of new energy and something
fresh. It may not be everybody’s taste but it is the evolution
of Country Music.
HD
:
What do you do when you have time off ?
RW
:
Close the door from the world, read a book and relax.
HD
:
What are your hopes for the future ?
RW
:
To keep writing and entertaining and hopefully put Britain on
the map for Alt-Country / Americana music.
HD
:
What is your personal philosophy ?
RW
:
Live life to the full!
Thank
you
