Rachael
Warwick left the exotic surroundings of her native Northampton
for the more mundane Nashville to record this six-track debut
album. The result, MAVERICK is a small but perfectly formed introduction
to a young lady, who may make her hometown famous for something
other than shoes.
Having
been swallowed up by the “Nashville machine” she would
surely exit the other end as a Shania or Sheryl clone wouldn’t
she? Well, not quite. While the opening track “Ask me no
questions” is pure American, radio-friendly rock, bright,
energetic and a little brash. The other five tracks show that
she has not forgotten where she came from or perhaps why she started
to make music in the first place.
“Thank
You” retains the cynical edge that she brought with her
from the 1990’s punk band Hype. In fact Warwick expertly
harnesses the friction caused by the clash between the quirky
eccentricities of this country and the more uniform US style of
Alt-country/Americana. It all combines to give MAVERICK an air
of uncertainty , which reached its peak with the glorious “Mistake”,
Warwick’s debut single.
It’s
wholly understandable that she’s mentioned in the same breath
as Dolly Parton. And not just because on songs like “Cowboy”
she displays the same kind of inner pain and ache. Both women
are single-minded and determined and it shows in their music.
It may be stating the obvious to say that, whilst six tracks as
good as these are fine as a teaser, next time the expectation
will be much higher.
